I was curious how a father from our church motivated his teenaged children to mow lawns and do errands for an elderly neighbor. He said, "We are the Johnsons – that is who we are and so this is what we do. It is just that simple." Serving was a Johnson family characteristic. Who we are shapes what we do!
Specific family values cause families to behave in different ways. A recent trip to Africa reinforced this truth to me. What is considered men's work and what is considered women's work in the African family culture I observed is much different than my culture. How we define ourselves massively impacts family character, resulting in what we do.
Being a member of the family of God impacts everything that I do…or at least should do! The Apostle Paul confirms my family relationship as a follower of Jesus.
If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. (Galatians 3:29 NIV)
My family relationship requires that I behave with Christ-like character,
Therefore as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. (Galatians 6:10 NIV)
Is there someone in our family of faith who needs us this week? Let us not miss the opportunity!
Sharing the journey with you,
