Laughter resonated throughout the room. Here I was in Kazakhstan at a medical conference belly laughing with doctors from all over Central Asia on "talent night." Great musical talent predominated but the most fun came from playful merriment. I enjoyed and participated, all the while wondering – why doesn't this happen more often in my life?
Humor in our lives today has become "sophisticated." Child-like playfulness and humor is out of style. Rather our humor as it "matures" becomes:
- More cynical
- More sarcastic and,
- More analytical
Where did the laughter go? Where is that wide-eyed child-like aura of expectation? Sometimes our "spiritual maturity" follows the path of our "humor maturity", with a touch of cynicism, sarcasm and/or analysis. Our emotions — bruised; our hearts — broken; our souls – soured with sin wipe away the freshness and simplicity of our faith. We forget that we are children — God's children. We forget that we can rush into His arms and find peace and laugh; and walk away with a child-like faith again.
"I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:3-4 NIV)
This week let us grow in humor and faith, as we in child-like humility, sincerity, awe and laughter, continue on our journey together.
Sharing the journey with you,
