What determines the course of my life? Obviously it includes such things as the family of my birth, the opportunities and difficulties of life and my choices. However, the Bible says that something else is actually more important – the guarding of my heart.
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. (Proverbs 4:23 NLT)
What in the world does it mean to guard my heart? God desires that my heart beat with a passionate love for Him that overflows into living out a life of compassion that honors Him. But daily evil thoughts and sinful images bombard my mind leading to the deteriorated health of my spiritual heart.
What are the symptoms of a sickly spiritual heart? Fear, selfish desires, grumbling words, sinful thoughts, lying, unforgiveness and so much more leading to a state of restlessness and discontent – not what God intended.
I guess guarding my heart is important. Will you join me this week in standing guard by making an appointment with the Great Physician to exam our hearts?
