The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines common sense as "sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts". Living safely and without risk is often considered common sense. However, many great achievements and noble accomplishments would have been left undone if common sense were the only measure of wise living.
Following Jesus challenges my notions of common sense. The disciples were challenged when they witnessed Lazarus' sister, Mary, out of love and gratitude, pouring expensive perfume, worth more than a year's wages, on Jesus. Common sense caused the disciples to be indignant…logic told them there was a better use for this valuable resource. Mary's radical faith seemed unreasonable and defied common sense. But Jesus said,
I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her. (Matthew 26:13 NIV)
Radical love for Jesus may be "risky and unsafe" in the eyes of others. Join me in dismissing the echoes of the world's view of common sense when it comes to loving Jesus.
