In her book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, Doris Kearns Goodwin chronicles the impact of Lincoln’s kindness to his enemies even as they attacked and smeared him. President Lincoln’s unwillingness to retaliate produced results for which he, to this day, is revered. Goodwin’s book reminded me of times that I have retaliated rather than overlooked an offense.
This week such an episode occurred. I felt wronged and responded with anger. I became a tuning fork vibrating with indignation at the most trivial of slights – not even intended. The person on the receiving end of my emotions did not deserve my response and my behavior certainly did not reflect the godliness I so desire to demonstrate.
What is wrong with me? I chose my way instead of heeding the words from Proverbs.
"A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense." (Proverbs 19:11 NIV)
This week I will try not to be so touchy! Will you join me in patiently reflecting the fruit of the Spirit rather than taking offense?
