Soon after arriving in Budapest a Greek physician asked me, "Do you know why God called you to Hungary?" With confidence I replied, "Yes, I think I do know." This kind, wise man quickly challenged me by saying that the God he knows is so much bigger than his own feeble thoughts and ideas. He then went on to tell how his vision was so much smaller than God's vision when God asked him to build a hospital in Greece. He struggled to believe that God would help him build a 90 bed hospital and God decided to make it a 250 bed hospital.
This tendency to think that I know what God is doing, places Him in a box of my own making and reduces Him to my limited mind. In doing so, I totally disregard His character and the fact that He is the one in charge, not me! I diminish the reality of His omniscience and sovereignty.
Isaiah reveals God's greatness through these rhetorical questions.
Who can fathom the Spirit of the LORD, or instruct the LORD as his counselor? Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding? Isaiah 40:13-14
