My willingness to be open and teachable determines the path of my life journey. What I learn is influenced by where I turn for answers and to whom I listen. The WHO is often as important as the WHAT in learning.
Early in my teenage years my mother and father encouraged me to find godly men and woman who would help to shape my character and the course of my life. These mentors were able to create a safe environment to explore my insecurities, my defensiveness and my need for direction. They taught me:
- To ask big questions
- To reveal my weaknesses
- To listen, listen, listen
These godly mentors exhibited teachable spirits filled with humility and honesty. They shared the practical challenges of living out the life of Christ.
Most importantly, God has given me His word and the Holy Spirit to mentor and guide me. His word tells me,
If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself, but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding. Fear of the Lord teaches wisdom; humility precedes honor. Proverbs 15:32-33 NLT
