Rarely do I hear people talk about the desire for meekness. Rarely do I hear a sermon on meekness. And rarely do I think about it. Yet Jesus tells me,

Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5 NIV)

So what is meekness? It feels like a weak character trait to me. However, meekness is not docility or timidity. Rather it is humility and patience while under provocation from others. This is certainly not one of my greatest strengths. As my self-will takes over my calling to godliness, my pursuit to prove myself right takes over. How blind I am!

This week a dear friend and I were in discussion. Once more I was trying to prove myself right. I was disappointed because instead of agreeing he continued to ask me questions. Without judgment, he encouraged me toward meekness without even mentioning the word.

Meekness is power under control with gentleness and respect. My dad used to say the picture of meekness is a wild horse under the control of a bridle.

I think I need a bridle. Thank God He has one!
