Recently I have spent time thinking about "the WHY of what I do" which reveals the motivations behind my actions. Understanding the power of WHY has helped me clarify WHAT I should do and HOW I should do it.

However, I have realized that stopping at the WHY question is not good enough. What about the WHO question? The WHO is the foundation for all these other questions. For me, the WHO is Jesus. For others, there is no WHO, which probably translates into "the WHO is me." My understanding of WHO (God – His attributes, His expectations of me and my subservience to Him) dictates my WHY, my WHAT, and my HOW. If the motivation and guiding principles for my actions come from me rather than God, I have missed the whole point.

The WHO, WHY and WHAT are answered in Paul’s words to the Ephesians,

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10 NIV)

  • We belong to God (WHO) and were created for His purposes
  • Our love for and commitment to Christ Jesus provides the motivation – the WHY.
  • Good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do – the WHAT

Will you join me this week in considering our actions informed by our understanding of God and His intentions for us?

Sharing the journey with you,

Bob Snyder
